Madrid Pt. 5: New Years Eve

Madrid, Spain
Thursday, December 31, 2015

I love Mexican food. Ever since I arrived in Russia I have been craving Mexican food. We decided to try a place out, but since it didn't open until 1 or 2 (Spanish eating habits are very different from what I'm used to) Catherine and I decided to pass time in the morning souvenir shopping. Afterwards, we met Ben at Tepic. Tepic was an amazing restaurant.  The food and decor were great! It was kind of pricey, but definitely worth the price. I'm not a foodie, and I usually like to eat at the cheapest places, but I'm glad we went here. Our waiter was really nice too, and he was from Mexico! If you happen to find yourself in Madrid and choose to eat at Tepic you must try their margarita. It's more of a smoothie and absolutely delicious. It was also very big!

Catherine and I wanted to go visit museums after lunch, but it turns out Madrid shuts down on New Years Eve and New Years Day. So, we ended up just walking around the city again and then stopping at the grocery store early so we could get groceries before it closed. Sometime in the afternoon they made salsa and guacamole for the night, we played cards, and then Catherine and I went back out to walk their dog so I could take these pictures. Also, I learned something about myself on that walk. Don't ever ask me to get you a Coke. I'll end getting three cans of all different types. When we returned we just hung out and got ready for the New Years Party we were going to. Ben took all the pictures below. I wish I had taken more pictures of Andazi (the dog) myself.
That night we went to their friend's house where we drank wine and champagne and I participated in several different Spanish New Years traditions. I ate 12 grapes (which is harder than it seems) and took my first step on my "right" foot. It got me thinking, do we have any holiday traditions in America? Black eyed peas and pork or something, right? I also met my cousin's friend who is Russian and I pretended I spoke Russian as well. It was a good holiday, and I think I need to make Madrid my new New Years Eve tradition!

    1. Oh yeah! I knew about the pork and I knew it went with something else but I couldn't remember. Isn't there also something about black eyed peas too?

  2. Can you share what kind of souvenirs you get wherever you travel? I'm so curious.

    1. Oh! That's a good idea, but I don't have any of the ones left I got for people just the ones I got myself.
