Painted Garages

I haven't had much opportunity to go out and take pictures lately. Even when A and I go for a walk it's usually in the same places we've walked a million times before or I'm waiting for the snow to melt to take better pictures of the buildings around the city. As I was scrolling through my catalogue in Lightroom I couldn't believe I hadn't posted these pictures before. Maybe I just assumed I had because I have a similar picture to the one above on Instagram.
Garage culture is real here, and if you follow me on Facebook or 8 Months in Ukraine you'll remember that we both shared this article about garages across the Soviet landscape. Unfortunately, this is the only decked out garage I've seen. Actually, I take that back. There is a garage with South Park painted on it but every time I walk by it's blocked by a car. One of these days I'll take a picture. Anyways, I loved the way the front of the garage looked and was so excited to see the side. It has total 80s vibes, which I love. I mean I'm a sucker for 80s movies. Cocoon anyone?
The last picture is obviously not a garage, but I loved all the colors that were going on, and it was near the garage above so I decided to include it. One thing I really hate about America, especially in the North, is the lack of color. One of the reasons I love San Francisco so much is because of how colorful the city is. I'm always surprised how much color I find in Russia because it's always had that stereotype of being a concrete paradise (which I'm not hating on. I love what the country does with concrete).
Where's the most colorful spot in your city?

  1. ooooh, love these! I was thinking the first one would be a great quilt... then I realized I had commented the same thing on your Instagram post.

I'm loving places with colorful buildings and my eye is always drawn to them. We've been discussing what color we want to paint our house and I'm having a hard time deciding between black and a bold color.

    1. Painting your house black would be interesting. I wonder how it would look? You should do a bright door! Like a bright mint green or something!

  2. There is such a contrast between the stereotypical grey apartment buildings and these colorful garages... They must be owned by individuals?

    1. I heard these garages are often put up illegally, but people do it all the time. Apparently the government will come and destroy them without warning, but I haven't seen any destroyed since living here.

  3. Yeah, a garage post! I love it!! :) And I love the concrete monotony of Ukraine and Russia, don't know why. I even have a block of towering, monochromatic khrushchyovkas as my screensaver.

Don't get mad, Jasilyn, but the most colorful spots around here right now are the trees... everything is starting to bloom and blossom. Hope Ufa isn't too far behind!

    1. It's definitely getting warmer... 30s but still warmer. The sun shines all day here so it's making the snow melt faster despite being just above freezing!
